Position: Communications Specialist

Overview: Supporting the Vision, Mission and Values of the Burnaby Hospital Foundation:

Reporting to the President, is responsible for all business and marketing communications writing for the Burnaby Hospital Foundation; develops and delivers the goals and objectives of a communications plan that will form the communications and marketing strategy within the Burnaby Hospital Foundation's business plan; promotes and advances the foundation's brand and provides communications support for all foundation campaigns, projects, initiatives and events.

Responsibilities:

KEY AREAS OF INVOLVEMENT INCLUDE:

  • Strategic Writing and Marketing:
  • Functions as the foundation’s communicator and marketer; generates story ideas, researches, interviews, writes and edits a variety of documents such as:
    • Annual Community report
    • Human Touch newsletter
    • Copywriting for brochures, ads, cases for support, etc.
    • Media advertising and media and/or press releases
    • Speeches, business articles, stewardship reports, brochures, correspondence, press kit, proposals and presentations in support of fund development staff
    • Content and materials for events (internal and external)
    • Content for the foundation’s Website
    • Annual communication’s and marketing plan
  • Media Relations:
    • Plans, manages and places foundation information in the media to enhance campaign and brand awareness.
    • Develops and updates a detailed database of key media.
    • Identifies and assists with media opportunities within the Foundation; maintains catalogue of Foundation media outputs (i.e. published and online newspaper articles).
  • Brand Maintenance:
    • Provides ongoing coordination of the Foundation website, including preparing and updating content, and coordinating updates with the Foundation’s Webmaster
    • Manages and catalogues the Foundation’s database of pictures and coordinates updates when required
    • Coordinates production of internal communication tools (i.e. staff business cards, letterhead, signage etc).

Qualifications:

A degree, diploma or certificate from a reputable education institution with a focus in communications, marketing, public relations, or other relevant discipline. Three years recent, related experience as a communications professional. Some graphic design skills and experience desirable. Knowledge of and experience in website management.

The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for companion, farm, and wild animals in BC. Paws for a Cause is the BC SPCA’s signature event and the largest campaign in support of animals in BC.

Position Overview

The Paws for a Cause Campaign Coordinator is a high-energy, creative personality with proven experience in project management, fundraising and capable of handling a multitude of projects simultaneously. You will work with the provincial Paws for a Cause campaign manager, Surrey branch staff and team of volunteers.

Position type

Full time, four and half or five-month contract. This position is based in Surrey but extensive commuting to the provincial office in Vancouver will be required.

Responsibilities

Provide logistical support for the execution of the Surrey Paws for a Cause campaign;
Recruit sponsors for the Surrey event;
Ensure that the logistical needs of the Surrey walk event are met: volunteer recruitment and coordination; recruitment and management of vendors, organizations, and exhibitors; ordering site equipment, site layout and management, site set-up and tear-down; other duties (as required);
Coordinate the sale of campaign merchandize;
Coordinate the distribution of promotional materials to Surrey based distributors, businesses, and sponsors;
Procure prizes for the event;
Manage supplies for the event.

Qualifications and skills

Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, Marketing or a related field;
Even planning and fundraising experience is a must;
Superb customer service and networking skills;
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of personality types;
Creative flair with an ability to entertain and create BC SPCA brand-consistent experiences
Strong understanding of event logistics and timelines to ensure thoroughness of task;
Excellent computer skills;
Proven capacity to deliver results within short deadlines;
Ability to work effectively in a team and independently;
Available to work evenings and weekends, as necessary;
Must have a valid driver's license and regular access to an insured vehicle;
Familiarity with the Surrey business environment;
Interest and commitment to the humane movement.

· Assists in event planning; works with planning teams on the development of activity schedules; participates in the development of survey questions.

· Monitors and follows up with contractors to ensure goods and services are provided as requested; arranges for discounts as appropriate; forwards invoices for payment.
· Obtains and organizes required equipment; transports equipment and loads and unloads vehicles; assists in the set-up and strike of various items such as signs and banners, tables, chairs, information supplies and other small equipment; maintains equipment inventory.
· Recruits volunteers for special events; provides instruction, orientation and work oversight.
· Maintains a variety of files and records related to the work such as those related to event revenues and petty cash expenditures; prepares invoices and cheque requisitions; issues receipts and handles cash.
· Performs related work as required.

Qualifications:
· Completion of a post-secondary diploma program in recreation or a related field, plus some related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
· Sound knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, practices and techniques related to the work performed.
· Sound knowledge of the policies, regulations and rules governing the work.
· Sound knowledge of the interests and functions of community groups and agencies and of available community and internal resources.
· Ability to participate in the planning, development, implementation and coordination of public special events, and to obtain and coordinate support requirements.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts, and to liaise with same on event planning and production.
· Ability to recruit, orient, direct and oversee the work of volunteers.
· Ability to draft various promotional materials and coordinate the design and production of same.

· Plans, assigns, supervises and reviews the work of one or more part time subordinates assisting in the work; participates in interviewing, trains and evaluates performance of same.
· Prepares event evaluation report in terms of departmental goals and objectives, reviews same with superior; prepares and maintains a variety of reports, records, files and correspondence; orders and maintains supplies such as coffee urns and Regional Parks informational materials; performs incidental typing.
· Performs related work as required.

Qualifications:

· Completion of a post secondary diploma program in recreation or a related field, plus sound related experience preferably including some supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
· Considerable knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of a community engagement program.
· Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, practices and techniques related to the work performed.

Recreation Programmer – Arts & Culture

With our unique Leigh Square Community Arts Village dedicated to community cultural development located in our downtown core, the Parks and Recreation team is looking for a full-time Recreation Programmer – Arts and Culture (40 hours/wk) to assist in developing and delivering a wide range of visual arts and cultural programs and services with the community.

The ideal applicant will be a creative, detail-oriented individual with solid problem-solving skills who has experience in the process of community engagement on projects from management to development and creation of the artwork/event/production and capacity building.  The Programmer plans, promotes, schedules, implements, manages, evaluates, delivers and provides feedback on studio courses and workshops, community outreach, art camps, artist residencies, public programs, special events, audience development and relationship building with the community.

Applicants should have a diploma/degree in Community Recreation, Fine Arts, Education or a related discipline along with supervisory experience and two years of progressively responsible experience in coordinating arts and cultural programs and services.  Assets include an understanding and knowledge of art education theories and programming practices, program activities and registration, budget tracking and statistics gathering.

The 2009 rate of pay for this position is $25.25 per hour, plus a comprehensive benefits package upon successful completion of a probationary period.  The terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement
