Communication and Event Coordinator

Bike Month, Commuter Challenge and Bike Valet 2008

Better Environmentally Sound Transportation (BEST) is seeking an employee dedicated to organizing events, communications and promotions.

The individual will benefit from the opportunity to learn and use a broad range of communications and organizational skills that are applicable in government, or the private or non-profit sector. The individual will also benefit from working in a non-profit setting and learning about the general operations of a non-profit.

Responsibilities:

· Organizing and promoting the BEST Pancake Breakfast

· Work with Bike Month Coordinator on communications, promotion and logistics for community and outreach events during Bike Month

· Work with Commuter Challenge Coordinator on communications and promotion for the 2008 Commuter Challenge events, including use of a new mapping tool

· Attend public events to educate public about BEST and sustainable transportation

· Assist with media relations

· Assist with research and content of updated BEST website

· Building the Bike Valet program at BEST

· Coordinating Bike Valet contracts and developing relationships with event planners and venues

· Operating Bike Valet at festivals and community events across Metro Vancouver

Qualifications:

· Must be a post-secondary student returning to school in the fall.

· Must be competent in written and spoken English

· Must be well-organized

· Must be comfortable with MS Office Suite

Volunteer Opportunity at the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes!

You can make a difference in the life of a child living with Type 1 Diabetes by becoming an event volunteer for the 2008 TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes on June 8, 2008 at the Greater Vancouver Zoo in support of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Hours: Approx 50hrs plus Event day
Location: Work from home and at Festival site.
Compensation: Volunteer position. Be mentored by an event professional with over 15 years experience as you learn event production. Plus an excellent reference letter.
Starting Date: June 2008

General Job Description
The Volunteer Coordinator, working as part of the East Richmond Community Association’s Multifest team, will be responsible for the coordination and scheduling of volunteers as well as on-site support. The coordinator will demonstrate leadership, interpersonal, problem solving and organizing skills.
This position requires proven organizational, communication and inter-personal skills, experience working with a diverse population, an understanding of event organization; computer skills: proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel, and Word.

Specific Responsibilities
• Create and maintain volunteer data-base (Microsoft Excel)
• Create, organize, and complete the festival volunteer roster for all aspects of the festival
• Correspond/E-Mail with existing and interested applicants
• Collect completed applications from all potential volunteers
• Host a Volunteer Orientation with the Event Coordinator.
• Prepare volunteer training manual.
• Organize volunteer accreditation.
• Work with Event Coordinator to coordinate event day volunteer and production duties.
• Attend organizational meetings, leading up to Multifest.
• Be available during Multifest (August 9, 2008) to oversee Volunteer Coordinator Assistants and all volunteer operations.

Job Description:

WORKING CONDITIONS: 3 month contract; Fulltime May – July 2008

SPECIFIC REPONSIBILITIES:
• Selling exhibit space for the PNE’s annual Fair. Concentration on the Home Depot Home Improvement Showcase.
• Sourcing prospective clients, conducting sales calls & submit reports of sales contacts.
• Developing and presentations to prospective clients.
• Perform other related duties as required by the department Manager.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
• Excellent interpersonal skills to establish working relationships with clients and encourage repeat business.
• Good organizational skills to provide timely and high quality service.
• Strong salesmanship & cold calling experience an asset.
• Energetic, self-motivated and requires minimum supervision.
• Must have good public speaking and presentation skills.

The Pacific Spirit Run is coming up on Saturday May 10th at UBC raising funds for dementia research and care initiatives funded through Tapestry Foundation for Heath Care.

Environmental Team: 8:00 am until 11:30 am
